How double-out checkouts work

In X01 games like 501 and 301 you must finish on a double. That one rule shapes every checkout route on this page.

Finish on a double

Your final dart must land in a double (the thin outer ring) or the bullseye, which counts as a double 25. Reaching zero on a single or treble is a bust.

Set up the right double

Good routes leave an even number that halves cleanly — 40 (D20), 32 (D16) or 16 (D8) — so a missed first dart still leaves a makeable double.

Mind the bust rule

Scoring more than you have left, or leaving exactly 1, busts your visit and resets your score to the start of the turn. The calculator only suggests safe routes.

Bogey numbers

Seven scores have no three-dart double-out finish — 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. From these, don't try to finish: leave a comfortable number such as 40 or 32 for your next visit.

Checkout questions, answered

What is the highest checkout in darts?
The highest possible checkout with three darts is 170, finished with two treble 20s (120) and the bullseye (50). It is known as the “big fish”.
What does “double out” mean?
Double out means the dart that takes you to zero must land in a double — the outer ring — or in the bullseye. If you reach zero on a single or treble, it is a bust and your score reverts.
What are bogey numbers in darts?
Bogey numbers cannot be checked out with three darts: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. From these scores you should leave a finishable total for your next visit.
What is the best checkout to leave?
Aim to leave an even number that finishes on a comfortable double, such as 40 (double 20), 32 (double 16) or 36 (double 18). These leave clean halving options if your first dart misses.
Can you finish on the bullseye?
Yes. The bullseye counts as a double 25, so it is a valid double-out finish. It is also how you check out 50, or the second dart of a 100 finish (treble 20, bull).
How do you check out 170?
Throw treble 20, treble 20, bullseye (60 + 60 + 50 = 170). This is the highest possible three-dart finish and the only checkout that ends on the bull from 170.
