What Is a Bust in Darts? Rules & How to Avoid It | Oche
A bust in darts explained — what causes it, what happens to your score, the tricky one-dart and odd-number traps, and how to stop busting in 501.
“Bust!” is the word every darts player dreads at the finish. It means a turn that should have won — or set up a win — counted for nothing. Understanding exactly what triggers a bust is the fastest way to stop it happening to you.
The definition
A bust happens in X01 games (501, 301, 701) when a turn ends in an impossible finishing position. There are three ways to bust:
- You score more than your remaining total.
- You leave yourself on exactly 1.
- You reach zero without finishing on a double.
When any of these happen, your score is reset to whatever it was at the start of the turn, and your opponent throws. The darts you threw that turn are wasted. The complete rule, with examples, is on our bust rules page.
Why you bust: the three traps
Overshooting
You’re on 16 and throw a treble 20. You needed 16; you scored 60. That’s an overshoot — instant bust.
Leaving 1
You’re on 18 and hit a single 17, leaving 1. Because the lowest double is double 1 (= 2), a score of 1 can never be finished. Leaving 1 is therefore an automatic bust, even though you didn’t overshoot.
Hitting zero on the wrong segment
You’re on 20 and hit a single 20 — that’s zero, but it’s not a double. Under the double-out rule the finishing dart must be a double, so reaching zero on a single 20 busts the turn.
How to avoid busting
Smart shot selection prevents almost every bust:
- Always leave an even double. Aim to leave 40, 32, 24, or 16 — never an awkward number like 39 or 25.
- Plan your finishing route before you throw, so you know your bail-out double if the first dart misses. Our double-out strategy guide walks through the safe routes.
- Don’t blindly chase the treble when a smaller, safer dart leaves a cleaner finish.
These are the same instincts that make a reliable 501 finisher.
Take the guesswork out
Most busts come from doing maths under pressure and picking the wrong dart. The Oche app flags your exact remaining score, suggests a checkout route that avoids dead-end numbers, and warns you when a dart would bust the turn — so the only “bust” you’ll hear is from the player on the other board.
