How to Throw a Dart: Grip, Stance & Release | Oche

Learn how to throw a dart properly — grip, stance, aim, throwing motion and release — with a beginner-friendly checklist for a repeatable, accurate throw.

A good darts throw is boringly repeatable. The players who group their darts tightly aren’t doing anything fancy — they’re doing the same simple thing every single time. If you’re just starting, or your darts are spraying, this checklist will get you a clean, consistent throw you can build on.

Grip: like a pen, not a fist

Hold the barrel with three or four fingers, the way you’d hold a pen. It should feel firm enough to control but relaxed — white knuckles ruin the release. There’s no single “correct” grip; what matters is that you use the same one every throw. Find a grip that feels natural and lock it in.

Stance: a stable base

Put your throwing-side foot forward against the oche, with your body angled toward the board so your throwing shoulder lines up with the target. Keep your weight balanced and still — wobble in your base becomes wobble in your darts. You can lean in slightly to get closer, but never so far you have to shift your feet to stay up. If you’re unsure where to stand, our oche and distance guide covers the line.

Aim: line up with one eye

Bring the dart up to roughly eye level and sight along it to your target. Most players close or favour one eye. Pick a precise point — not “the 20” but the exact spot in the treble — because vague aim produces vague results.

The throw: elbow up, hinge cleanly

Keep your elbow up and pointing at the board, and throw by hinging at the elbow — the upper arm stays still while the forearm swings forward. Don’t push with your shoulder or flick from the wrist alone. A smooth, unhurried acceleration beats a hard jab every time.

Release and follow-through

Release at the same point in the swing each time — this single factor decides most of your consistency. Let the fingers open cleanly so the dart slides off rather than being thrown. Then follow through: let your arm continue toward the target, fingers ending pointed at where you aimed. A cut-off follow-through drops darts low.

The beginner checklist

  1. Same grip, relaxed.
  2. Stable, still stance — throwing foot forward.
  3. Sight along the dart to a precise point.
  4. Elbow up, hinge the forearm.
  5. Release at the same spot, every time.
  6. Follow through toward the target.

Groove it with deliberate reps

Technique only sticks through repetition with attention. Drill it using our practice routines, and once the throw feels repeatable, the proof is in the grouping. The Oche X01 scorer and stats dashboard track your scoring consistency over time, so you can confirm your new throw is actually tightening up — and not just feeling better. Frequently asked questions

How should you grip a dart?
Hold the barrel like a pen, with three or four fingers, firm enough to control it but relaxed enough not to whiten your knuckles. The grip must be the same every throw — consistency matters far more than the exact finger count.
What is the correct stance for throwing darts?
Stand with your throwing-side foot forward against the oche, body angled toward the board, and your weight stable and still. Lean in slightly without overbalancing. A steady base stops your throw drifting.
Why are my darts not grouping together?
Inconsistent darts almost always come from an inconsistent release or a moving body. Keep your elbow up and still, follow through toward the target, and release at the same point every time. Film yourself or check your stats to spot the drift.
